The Washburn Day Use Picnic Area is part of Hearst San Simeon State Park (805) 927-2020 one of the oldest parks in the California State Park system and one of the most diverse parks in the area. The park is located off the Pacific Coast Highway 1, 6 miles south of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument Visitors Center, just south of the motel row at San Simeon acres and just north of the last Moonstone Beach Drive turnoff of the village of Cambria.
There is a beach parking pullout and a few oceanfront picnic tables directly across the Pacific Coast Highway 1 from this picnic area and a picnic in quite enjoyable their when the sun is shining and the wind is calm but those times are few.
Although the Washburn Picnic Area is on the inland side of the PCH 1 it is only a short walk under the bridge to get on the beach and it is a real advantage at this picnic spot that it is partially sheltered from the cool onshore ocean winds. Washburn Day Use Area also has many amenities to enhance your picnic such as paved parking, restrooms, running potable water, picnic tables, and barbecue grill stands.
There are also many recreational and nature study activities that can be enjoyed at this spot. As mentioned the beach is just a short walk where you can beach-comb along the smooth gravel or explore tide-pools along the rocky sections, kite flying is often good but you should check about rules and regulations if you want to fish. If you go the inland direction there is a self-guided wheelchair accessible nature tour with interpretive signs; The the 3.5 mile trail runs through parts of the San Simeon Natural Preserve and the Washburn Campground and includes scenic overlooks, rest-stop benches and interpretive panels with information on wildlife and habitat. The sizeable portion of the trail along the seasonal wetland is wheelchair accessible.
